SUBTLE NATURAL MATERIALS will be popping up all over the place. Think jute (yes still), hemp, terracotta, rattan, bamboo and plywood, which draw inspiration from Japanese design aesthetics. These materials can be incorporated into any space with ease, and add an understated warmth that can soften any space.
CARPET CREATIVE (my own term) was a hit at this year’s Milan Design Week. It’s a funky reinvention of how carpet can be used – walls, ceilings, chairs. While this makes me think of a 60’s psilocybin trip, it is an interesting design idea for those with the guts to try it. The added bonus of carpet, specifically on walls, is increased soundproofing.
TEXTURED WALLPAPERS continue to be a popular design trend leading into 2020, and will likely stick around for some time. Having a subtle wall texture like a linear grass texture or an all white modern pattern relief can create a beautiful and visually interesting interior feeling.
LETTING NATURE IN is growing in popularity for use or inspiration for interior designs. This can be seen through the use of natural color palettes (rose & natural shades of greens and blues) all the way to big bodied plants that fill up a space, corner or are just the main focal point of a room. Wall papers, pillow covers, rugs and decorative items that have plant/botanical patterns will be the rage in 2020.
