With summer upon us, many people are embarking on distant travels, but it’s worth remembering you don’t need to go far to have an extraordinary experience. San Francisco is a world-class destination, and sometimes we forget how beautiful our own backyard truly is. Staycations are a fantastic way to reconnect with the city and local gems we often overlook because of our daily routines.
Here are my top recommendations for the ultimate San Francisco staycation, organized into three categories: Adventurous, Casual, and Splurge-Worthy.
Where to Stay
Adventurous: If you enjoy camping, head to Bicentennial Campground in the Marin Headlands. Just 20 minutes from the city, this low-key campground offers stellar views and a refreshing escape.
Casual: Try a VRBO or Airbnb in a new neighborhood! Check out this lovely option in Pacific Heights or this Victorian in the heart of Haight-Ashbury.
Splurge-Worthy: For a luxurious experience, consider the Lodge at the Presidio or the Four Seasons Hotel. The Lodge offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of the Presidio, while the Four Seasons provides urban excitement with city views and walkability to shops and restaurants.
Things to Do

Adventurous: Get your adrenaline pumping with a guided mountain bike ride or a hike to Point Bonita Lighthouse. Charter a sailboat ride around the bay or try rock climbing at Movement Rock Gym, especially if you’re staying close by at the Lodge in the Presidio.
Casual: Step into nostalgia at Balboa Theater in the Outer Richmond for monthly curated re-runs of classic cinema. Enjoy vintage arcade games at Musee Mecanique on Fisherman’s Wharf or modern games at Emporium Arcade Bar. Discover the California Academy of Sciences Nightlife events every Thursday for a blend of learning, spectacle, and drinks.
Splurge-Worthy: Secure tickets to the SF Symphony for a night of breathtaking music. If you’re reading this before June 30th, don’t miss the roaring 1920s immersive theater experience, Speakeasy, for an unforgettable night.
Where to Eat

Adventurous: The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar offers an adult version of the Rainforest Cafe, with a tropical atmosphere and live music from the Island Groove cover band starting at 7 PM nightly.
Casual: Japantown boasts countless dining options that will leave you satisfied. Notable mentions include Marufuku Ramen, Hinodeya Ramen Bar, and Udon Mugizo.
Splurge-Worthy: Afternoon tea at the historic Palace Hotel will transport you to Europe. And if the idea of being transported to another continent sounds delightful, visit Foreign Cinema, where you can enjoy a romantic meal while watching a film.
Become a Tourist

Adventurous: Rediscover Alcatraz Island with its numerous daily tours. You’ll appreciate the city views and the historical significance of the island.
Casual: Take a cable car ride and hang off the side! The Hyde Street Cable Car is my favorite, running from Market to Fisherman’s Wharf.
Splurge-Worthy: Though I haven’t done it yet, booking a helicopter tour over the city is on my list. Imagine the excitement and beauty of seeing San Francisco from a bird’s-eye view.
We are incredibly fortunate to call San Francisco home, and this list only begins to scratch the surface of what our city has to offer.
Have you ever done an SF staycation? If so, what would you add to my recommendations? I would love to hear from you.
No matter where your travels take you this summer, I hope you have a wonderful time!
